Welcome to Montpellier

A city of heritage and contemporary treasures, Montpellier is a Mediterranean crossroads, a destination of exceptional character. This beautiful city in the south of France has medieval origins, and the streets and squares of its city center, its 12th-century medical school and its historic monuments attract visitors from all over the world. It's also a modern metropolis, with original and innovative architecture, open to science, contemporary culture, tourism and leisure activities. But Montpellier has many other assets too.

The surrounding area is an unspoiled region, with a wide variety of landscapes, from the biodiversity-rich and productive ponds of its coastline (11 km away from Montpellier) to the vineyards and charming villages of its countryside. The typical Mediterranean lifestyle of Montpellier residents combines French-style gastronomy with sun-drenched wines.

Suggestions for excursions (not included)

For those who wish to take advantage of their free time to discover the area, we recommend:

  • A guided tour of the historic center of Montpellier

  • A visit to the historic medieval city of Aigues-Mortes and its exploited salt marshes

  • A cycle trip to the village of Palavas-les-Flots and the ruins of the Maguelonne Abbey to enjoy views of the sea and lagoons (including bird watching).

  • A day trip to the nearby Thau lagoon and the city of Sète to sample local shellfish (oysters, mussels, tellines)

  • Local wine tasting in the many wine bars of Montpellier or in the many wine cellars around the Pic-Saint-Loup and Hortus hills
