SEA-UNICORN at FSBI 2023

Updated: Oct 31

In July 2023, SEA-UNICORN organised a workshop, entitled "Moving from fish movements to fish-mediated fluxes" and sponsored a conference session entitled "Fish movements and connectivity" at the FSBI 2023 International Symposium Fish Habitat Ecology in a Changing Climate (24-28 July 2023, Univ. of Essex, UK).

Action Chair Dr Audrey Darnaude introduced the session and keynote speaker Pr Bronwyn Gillanders spoke about "Estimating movements and connectivity patterns of fish accross a changing seascape". This was followed by a series of 5 talks and 7 speed-talks on how anthropogenic activities and climate change alter fish movements and connectivity patterns and how this impact ecosystem services and ecosystem functions. 14 posters on the topic were also displayed during the poster session on July 25th.

Co-convened by the University of Essex (UK) and the Centre for the Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (UK), the symposium gathered over 200 delegates coming from all over the world, and was a great success in sharing ideas, knowledge and expertise, and developping international collaborations. The themes of the symposium were broad and inclusive, covering fish biogeography, habitat management/restoration, social-ecological connectivity, food web dynamics and One Health. The topics all have clear links to UN Sustainable Development Goals (e.g. Climate Action, Life Below Water), and the critical roles and services that fish provide, and will attract a diverse, interdisciplinary and international forum.
